Among the interesting things I have read in recent days was an interview with Angolan President Dos Santos. In this interview he states that Angola is ready and willing to help out Portugal during the latter's financial crisis.
Hard to see where receiving aid from a fledgling democracy in Africa that was once their colonial possession could be advantageous to Portugal. While this proposal is refreshing to see, it is not reflective of the position of most Angolans in relation to the position of most Portuguese.
Angola will likely see about a 12% growth in their economy in the next year. This growth is due to oil resources and not due to any measure of improved manufacturing output or productivity in the population--which remains primarily cut out of the loop in regards to the oil wealth. So, while the GDP Per Capita is approaching U.S. $5000, most people in Angola are living on less than $1000 per year. Now, how many people living on less than $1000 per year are interested in bailing out a developed European country? Apparently fledgling democracy does not mean popularly constrained government.
"We're aware of the difficulties the Portuguese people have faced recently to end the crisis."
"Angola is open and available to help Portugal face this crisis to the benefit and advantage of both countries."
